Who is Your God?

By Jack Graham

The past generation has spent a great deal of time attempting to promote and produce values… family and traditional values.

But, of course, we are discovering that without God that is impossible. To change the character or the morality of a people is dependent upon God. Only God can change behavior. Only God can really transform the way that we live.

So it’s not surprising in the Ten Commandments that the first and foundational commandment is about God himself… who he is and how we can know him. Until we establish who God is to us, we will just be patching the wall rather than dealing with the foundation. We will be dealing with symptoms rather than the real disease in our lives.

The real disease is the absence of God Almighty in the heart. God is missing from the fabric and the foundation of our lives! And there’s no chance of restoring morality without restoring the source of morality, the Lord our God.

To do this, we must begin with the truth of all truths… the truth about God found in his Word. And in Exodus 20:3, God is explicit about how you and I are to view him: “You shall have no other gods before me.”

What happens if we fail to make God our one, true God? I’ll tell you.

A philosopher by the name of Theodore Dashevsky said, “If there is no God, everything is permitted.” That means if there is no God, then all bets are off! No holds are barred. You do it your way, I’ll live it my way. This mindset reflects today’s new brand of atheism and it is bold and aggressive. It’s almost a reverse evangelism towards atheism.

One of the most popular of the new books on atheism is written by Oxford biologist Richard Dawkins. In his book The God Delusion, he writes, “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasing character in all of fiction. Jealous and proud of it. A petty, unjust, unforgiving, control freak. A vindictive, blood-thirsty ethnic cleanser. …homophobic, racist, infanticidal.…” The author only becomes more hostile and blasphemous as he goes.

Clearly, Dawkins and others like him want everyone to believe that God is dead… that he is unworthy of our love and commitment.

And yet, God cannot be silenced! God has placed within each of us the need to know him. He has set eternity in our hearts… a God-link in our DNA and in our very personalities… a desire to know the God who made us.

So let me ask you, do you truly know this God? Have you aligned your life to the priorities of the First Commandment?

Because knowing God is more than just knowing facts or having opinions about God. It is more than choosing God as you conceive him to be. The God of the Bible… the God who speaks these commandments… is Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

And as Christians, we are to give ourselves to trust in this God and to follow him! That’s the difference between knowing about God and knowing God. Knowing God changes the way you live.

Our world today is desperate to see this bigger, brighter picture of what it means to follow Christ. So make God the God of your life. Let him help you become a high definition believer in a world that is hungry for truth and meaning!
